Wandering Nutter, Sale

Post  xray on Thu Apr 17, 2008 4:02 am

This guy must be on your website. He walks between Stretford and Sale, backwards and forwards. He's middle-aged (we think, but its hard to tell in nutty years. He could be 24), and he's got a long grey dreadlock (only 1). He shouts to himself, like all the best nutters do. He also carries a rucksack on his back and carries a holdall (upgraded from plastic bags) in each hand. Again, as every good nutter should, he shouts obscenities at you if you try and talk to him (or urban myth claims. Personally, I wouldn't get that close. He smells).

I pass him regularly, he can usually be found in the late afternoon outside the block of offices opposite Cooper Sports.
I have heard that he has a rich sister (?) but he refuses to take anything off her. I know someone who approached him to give him some cash but again, as you suggest he didn't want anything.

Wandering Nutter could also have been known as Flixton/Stretford or Sale Walking Man as he also covered these areas. Last time I saw him was in Sale in the mid-nineties and that is what he must have been as well. A harmless guy who enjoyed walking - buttocks like rocks!

Leave Wandering Nutter alone, I always feel a warm glow of respect when I see him. The man has survived for years with nothing but his heavy bags (changes of clothes, I think) and his grey dreads. He used to come in my Dad's shop and was always nothing less than polite. He also doesn't stink that bad - he urinates outside of his pants! As has been stated, he doesn't ask for money nor does he want it - surely this should be commended. And those people who presume he is in need because of his appearance deserve the mouthful they receive.

He's still wandering around. Hair still in dreads with two pig tails at the sides. I see him every morning crossing over where the motorway slip Chester Road on his way to Stretfford. Then I see him on my way home from work coming back from Stretfford to Sale.

Very Happy

Haven't got a clue how old the guy must be but I've been working in Sale for the best part of 14 years and he seem to have always been around.

Oooh, that bloke's been wandering about on Cross Street as long as I can remember. I seem to recall trying to strike up a conversation with him once when on the way back from the pub, but he wasn't having any of it.

Oh, and the affectionate nickname he's earned amongst my friends is 'Rob Zombie', due to the uncanny likeness.

work in sale, and yep I still see him, at first it was a shock, but you just get used to him.
its strange cos sale is such a posh area too. you wouldnt expect to see homeless people there.
anyone know where he lives? sleeps, squats etc?

there is also another nutter in sale, an elderly lady, about 65ish, i belive she has terets
she can be seen walkin around chester road at the cross rds near maddisons buttie shop.

often shouts fouls language and marches around quite violently and spits everywhere too Smile

I've seen the wandering nutter a couple of times. I call him bagman

Last saw him a month or two ago on Dane Road where it meets Cross Street. With all his bags, drinking cider and attracting stares from passing cars.

Speculated with a mate as to what is in the bags, he reckons they're fill of money.

I also took his photo on Chester Road as he took a swig last February. Bit shit though.

I've heard he sleeps in a passageway near TGI Fridays.

This man is a legend. Seen ALL all over the show around the Sale/Stretford area. Sleeps in the book bin in Stretford tip. FACT. Always try to spot him, wonder if he has a life story??????? Would it be as appealing as The terminal man Alfred Merhan IMO. I would write it just out of interest.

C ya!

Hey this guy is harmless!!!
A few years back I was on the metrolink (on my own) going on a night out in manchester and this dreadlocked man was on the tram and yeah he smells bad, but when I got off the tram and proceeded to walk towards Monroe's via the underneath of Piccadilly station he was walking the same way. I felt very uneasy as it's quite dark and desolate under there, but he turned to me and asked me where I'd got my nice boots from (these were New Rock biker boots!). Me being rather shocked at the conversation and rather dumb told him I'd bought them in Camden where they are much cheaper than in the shops in Manchester. And started wafflng about how they are 110 in London and around 150 in Manchester... Like he could really afford a pair! He then proceeded to show me a pair of plimsolls he had got in a charity shop for 15p, bless him!
I still see him doing his walk from Sale to Stretford when I'm driving home!
He's a star!

Unfortunately wandering nutter was attacked a couple of weeks ago - they had to cut his hair to treat him which is why you may have seen short hair, unfortunately he had to goo back in and died.

RIP

I heard that the body found near the Trafford Centre the other week was that of Wandering Nutter??? Apparentely he stepped out onto the fly over and hesitated as two large lorries came speeding along... Caught off balance he fell into the road and was decapitated by one of the lorries... This could be a load of rubbish but if he'd just come out of Trafford General only to be mowed down, how unlucky is that???

RIP

Im kinda sad really that he's popped his clogs...

well at least he's finally been released from his walking limbo of chester rd.

Ive changed job now, but I worked in Sale for 2 years and I have to say that the quality and shear number of local legends was quite frankly the best ive sampled.
must be something in the water

here is the bbc page, for future viewers.

Body found near Trafford Centre
Police are investigating the discovery of a body near the Trafford Centre in Greater Manchester.
Officers found the man lying in the middle of The Parkway, close to the junction with the M60. It is not yet known who he is or how he died.

The Parkway and the exit slip roads of junction nine of the motorway were closed and were reopened mid-afternoon on Wednesday.

A police spokeswoman said the death was being treated as suspicious.

A post-mortem examination has taken place.
